Give to Your Teacher: Show You Care by Helping Them Care

A teacher is the next best thing to a parent. They are such a big part of our growth, yet often undervalued. But it doesn’t take much to change that. Here is some advice for showing you care with the right kind of gift:

Know your teacher. Usually teacher’s go into education believing they can make a difference in people’s lives. For this reason, mugs and thank you cards don’t always reach right to the heart, though they are received politely and gratefully. You don’t want to do what everybody else has been doing, and what you can predict they will do again this year. Be unique. The starting point of that would be to know the teacher and what it is they are passionate about. After all, they started teaching to help others – how can you help them fulfill their mission?

While they receive their mounds of mugs and plants, give a gift that says you care about what they care about. Consider giving to charity in their name. ‘Charity’ can be local or international. For instance:

Children in need, even at the very school the teacher works at. Teacher’s struggle when their students struggle. Sometimes situations at home make life at school more difficult than the norm for a child. Take action and set up a fund (perhaps privately) for students in need at the school, all in the name of the teacher.

Underprivileged education. There are students all over the world. The brave and adventurous, who believe in education for all, may travel to new worlds to teach at an orphanage or community school. But that doesn’t mean our backup and support has no meaning at home. Not everyone can go, but anyone can give. Consider donating to a child’s education through an international organization, again in a teacher’s name.

If, on the other hand, you would rather give an actual object for them to remember you by, and still show you care about what they do, here are some other ideas:

Buy a garden for the school. Environmental education is a proactive solution to reducing the planet’s deterioration in the future. When kids learn at a young age, they can be equipped with the knowledge they need to improve our lives for the better by taking care of mother earth. Donating a few dozen plants to a teacher’s classroom will allow the chance for a lesson that will make a difference. Imagine going on a tree-planting field trip to help fight pollution…

Bake a healthy snack. With tests to mark and homework to check, teachers spend even their evenings doing work. Keeping up with nutrition can be a hefty task when there’s so much to do. By baking a healthy snack, or even preparing an oven-ready meal, you can contribute to a teacher’s well being!

Donate used toys to the classroom. This could work for furniture too. Why let those old puzzles and doll houses go to waste? Give them to the classroom! Teacher’s always have to stay well-stocked with things for their kids to play with. This is one case where your junk could become another’s treasure.

Make a slideshow. Going digital is a great way to reduce the amount of trees we cut down to make paper. Use a simple program like Power Point or iMovie to make a quick, yet fun, slideshow of photos you’ve taken throughout the school year. You’ll have to be a little sly with this one, but the end result will surely bring smiles to a teacher’s face for years to come. Include little effects (usually installed in the program) and captions to remind them of the fond memories. Write a thank you note at the end to let them know how appreciated they are. You can either deliver it electronically, or burn it onto a disk and make a custom-cover case for presenting.

Survival Kits: 9 Things to Look For While Making a Choice

Whether you’re looking for a survival kit to prepare for the frequent hurricanes that plague your state, or a wilderness kit to accompany you on a camping trip, an emergency kit is an absolute must. It’s easy to find a survival kit, and you have a choice of pre-assembled ones that are customized to meet any unforeseen situation you may find yourself in, to choose from.

However, just because a company declares its survival kit to be “emergency gear,” there’s really no guarantee that these items will actually be of good quality, or will be effective in a dire situation. There’s nothing worse than reaching for your survival kit during a power blackout in hurricane season, and realizing that the flashlights come with weak batteries.

Here are a few of the things to look for when you buy a survival kit.

The Kit Should Contain All Basic Supplies

You would be surprised at the number of kits out there that neglect to pack water. No matter what the emergency, water is one of the biggest necessities you will face. It’s also common to have kits that don’t contain other bare essentials, like torch lights or matches. Always look at the accompanying picture of your survival kit to determine if it has all the things you’ll need.

Items Must Be of High Quality

The items in your kit should be top of the line. Before ordering a kit, don’t hesitate to ask the company where they source their items from. Compasses must not be mere showpieces, but must function well. A knife must be a high quality one, with a fixed blade and sturdy handles. Buying a poor quality kit may be cheaper, but ultimately, it all comes down to the price you’re willing to pay for your survival.

Adequate Quantity of Items

Make sure that you’re not being hoodwinked about the number of items in your kit. Some unscrupulous companies actually add up the number of matches in the matchbox to pump up the number of items in the kit. Make sure you have adequate quantities of the supplies before you make a purchase. A first aid package that’s part of a survival kit must contain more than a 50 ml bottle of antiseptic solution and four Band Aids.

Versatility

Your kit should contain a few things that can be used in a multitude of ways in a pinch. For instance, garbage bags and duct tape have so many uses, they are hard to count. These don’t take up a lot of space, but can be incredibly handy.

Expensive vs. Low Cost Ones

Low cost survival kits that seem like a bargain may have you playing Russian roulette with your life. Remember, when you finally do open your survival kit, it may be when you realize you’re out of fresh water supplies during an incoming storm, and the announcer on the TV intones that government help won’t be arriving for at least 36 hours. Do you really want to be stuck with two packets of potable water for your family of four?

Expiration Dates

Ask your kit supplier about the expiration dates for the items in your list. Remember, that even if they are marked as being good for five years or more, they may lose some of their longevity or potability, in harsh conditions in warehouses, or during transportation.

Easy to open

Your survival kit should be easy to open in an emergency. This is where high quality and expensive emergency gear comes into the picture again. You don’t want to be left grappling with a bag zipper, in an emergency.

Easy to Use

Emergency survival gear can range from basic kits that are designed for use by those who have little experience surviving the great outdoors, to full-scale, ultra sophisticated, military-style kits that can require some skill to use. If your idea of survival is doing without the air conditioner in autumn, you are probably better off with a simple and basic kit that doesn’t requite high-end expertise to use.

Buy More Than One Kit Depending Your Needs

There can’t be a single survival kit that can prepare you for everything from a power breakdown to a biological attack. It’s always best to customize your requirements at different points, with a choice of two or more survival kits. For instance, if you are an avid trekker, you’ll probably need more than one wilderness survival kit, in addition to a basic survival kit. Besides, it’s a wise idea to have a kit each in your home, car and office.

Why Cedar is the Wood of Choice

When designing a carved wood welcome sign, one of the first things you should consider is the material from which it will be created. If you are looking for a classic rustic sign which speaks to nature, harmony, and environmental reverence; you ought to choose wood. If your sign will be placed outside, you will need a wood that will withstand a variety of weather conditions without becoming cracked, damaged or flawed over time. Western Red Cedar is the top choice and is used in the creation of the finest custom-crafted signs for its amazing attributes.

Cedar is dimensionally stable – its durability is legendary. This means it lies flat and straight without warping or cracking like most other woods will do. This also means it will withstand all that nature and weather will conspire against it and still look great over a long period of time. This is the stuff West Texas fence posts are made from! Red Cedar was used in the construction of King Solomon’s temple in Jerusalem circa 1000 BC. The use of cedar is mentioned in The Iliad. Red Cedar is used particularly in applications requiring resistance to weather, such as shakes and shingles – Totem poles; for heavens’ sake!

Cedar also won’t decay nor does it rot. Western Red Cedar is the first and clear choice for carved wooden signs. The natural oils it contains keep deterioration from happening as this preserves the wood from decay. Cedar also has a wonderful aroma, thus adding to the rustic feel of your lodge, cabin or RV. If you choose Western Red Cedar as the material for your next personalized welcome sign, you will be able to keep your sign for a very long time.

Whether you decide to maintain its finish, or just leave it in its natural state, you will be happy with the many great attributes of this wood. Although unfinished cedar will change colors over time, the slow metamorphosis is completely appealing. Because Red Cedar doesn’t rot, it will never really damage, thus making it visually appealing and very much intact for many, many years to come. To maintain its richly textured grain with amber, cinnamon and sienna colorings, do not employ spar varnish or polyurethane. There is a way, way better solution to durability than these old-fashioned approaches. A green finish system which releases zero VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) formulated to enhance and enrich the natural durability and appearance of western red cedar. Seek a vendor employing finish formulas that enhance water damage and reduce graying by incorporating sun-blocking, ultra-violet protection.

Western Red Cedar will also not bow or sag over time. This means your sign will stay straight and visible for as long as you keep it up. Because of this, your sign will last as long as your business, and will look just as beautiful in years to come as it did the day it was created. Since it is self-preserved, you will not have to take a lot of time treating it, and can feel confident in the knowledge that you will see a definite return on your investment.

I love Western Red Cedar and have been using this amazing and legendary material for over 40 years in construction and my art of carving personalized outdoor welcome signs. ‘How The Grinch Stole Christmas’ was first made as an animation for television but other versions have since been done as motion pictures. The Grinch is a grouchy, green man who lives in the mountains above the small town of Whoville where residents, called The Whos, celebrate Christmas enthusiastically every year. The Grinch who doesn’t like Christmas ,wants to spoil it for Whoville and so he tries to steal all the toys, food and gifts that The Whos have accumulated for Christmas. The movie provides a lesson on the true meaning of Christmas.

‘A Charlie Brown’s Christmas is an animated television movie about the popular Peanuts comic strip. The movie is about the comic strip’s main character, Charlie Brown, and tells of the experience with his friends for Christmas. It also has Biblical references that relates to the true meaning of Christmas.

‘Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer’ is also an animation about the reindeer with a shiny nose that kisses a pretty girl and also helps out his friends.

Metal Detector Techniques For Tesoro and Whites Metal Detectors

Metal Detecting Techniques

Using a Tesoro or Whites metal detector is easy but, just like other hobbies, getting the best results will take some time and practice.

Walk along slowly, moving the coil from side to side. Waving the coil slowly will allow you to detect deeper objects. As the search pattern for most coils is shaped like a cone a four inch search area at the surface will only be one inch at ten inches deep. Some detectors have a D shaped search area and will cover a larger area. The Minelab Exacalibur has this pattern. Go over the whole area once to remove any junk then you can repeat the search to find any targets that were masked by the junk.

Discrimination

When detecting in a new area search the whole area first without using discrimination in order to remove any junk. Then you can repeat the search to find targets that were being masked. Aluminium foil can easily be mistaken for gold and lots of other junk also sounds like treasure so it’s best to remove these before using discrimination. When the junk has been removed use a grid pattern to search for targets. Although you’ll end up doing a lot of digging to remove ll the junk first you will find treasure! You can use discrimination more when you are more experienced and familiar with your metal detector.

Fill in the Holes

Always fill in any holes you have dug before you leave the site. In addition to leaving the area as you found it this will also prevent other treasure hunters from knowing where you were digging.

After a Rainstorm

Detectors often work much better when the ground is wet so after rain is a good time to go detecting. Objects can also be brought to the surface by sand and debris being washed away by the rain so are easier to find.

Where to Detect

Before you even go out to search for treasure do your homework. use the local library or the internet to find sites that were used in the past. Hotel sites, market places, popular beaches are all areas that can produce treasure. Other places to try are churches, old school yards and parks. Always ask permission before you dig holes on private land! Ask old people in your are where the popular places for people to congregate were, where people picnicked or where the old swimming holes used to be.

Our Favorite Treasure Hunting Places

Popular beaches are good places to find watches, coins, watches and relics.

Parks are another popular place to find treasure. This includes city parks, camping grounds, ballfields, picnicking places where you may find find coins, watches and jewelry. Shady places, for example under large trees or around old bandstands are good places to search.

Schools and playgrounds, recreation areas, swings etc are good places to find coins, jewelry and watches. Around old trees and grassy areas or shady spots where people would congregate are places to search.

Old houses and their backyards are great places to look. Search out old paths and walkways to search along. You may find coins, jewelry, relics etc.

Fishing spots, river banks, swimming holes and old marinas are great for finding relics, old coins, buttons etc.

Hiking trails, woods, old wagon trails and overgrown foundations are great places to search for coins, bottles relics etc.

The oldest buildings in many towns and villages are churches and many people congregated in the churchyard or around the church so they are great places for finding jewelry, relics coins etc.

Advent Calendars

History of Advent:

Advent began to be celebrated or followed in the fourth century, shortly after the first council of Nicaea dictated the Nicene Creed, wherein they tried to set forth their interpretation of the scriptures and how people should believe and what holidays they should have and when. The word advent means coming, as in the coming of Jesus Christ. Advent celebrates his first coming and looks forward to his second coming. The German Lutherans seem to be the first Christians to come up with the advent calendar, which started on December first and was used to count down the days to the birth of baby Jesus. In the beginning people would put a chalk mark on their door or the number of the day, others would light a new candle each day which symbolized the light of Christ ever shining.

Advent calendars were first made by hand, there are stories of families putting 24 candies on a board where children could take 1 candy off per day to count down the days to Christmas which celebrates the birth of Christ. Later, as with most things advent calendars became commercialized, when the first commercial calendar was made is a point of dispute, some saying it was made in 1902 others say 1908 by Gerhard Lang. Langs printing firm made calendars with pictures and then made little doors over them. Unfortunately his firm went out of business in the mid 1930s and the practice of using advent calendars seems to have died off during World War 2. Once the war was over a man named Richard Sellmer who lived in Stuttgart Germany started making the advent calendars once more. This time the market grew to much of the world, which also means several other companies now also produce advent calendars.

Modern Advent Calendars:

Most advent calendars have 24 little doors like the Wooden Santa Advent Calendar or even 24 drawers, in these drawers or behind the doors there can be a picture or a bible verse, something to do with the nativity, although more often today its just something to do with Santa and less to do with Christ. By using 24 days, you can start advent on December one and count down to the 24 which is Christmas Eve, although some calendars have 25 to make it to Christmas Day. The idea is to open the door with the number on it that corresponds to the date, behind the door is a picture that relates to the nativity or a phrase from the Bible that relates to the birth of Christ. There are some electronics like the Talking Advent Calendars with Nativity Scene which do both, as you open the door you hear about the ornament inside which relates to the Nativity scene as described in the Bible. Today calendars also have candy or chocolate inside them, which seems more directed at children or adults with a good sweet tooth, but since there is nothing relating to the birth of Christ, it seems these are more for just counting down the days till Christmas when Santa will bring presents, like the Santa and Tree Advent Calendar.

Community Advent Calendars:

Some communities get together and make large outdoor advent calendars for all to share in the count down. One of the most famous is set in a small town in Germany called Gengenbach, where they claim to have the largest outdoor advent calendar. The town hall has 24 windows and these are used as the 24 doors. Each year artists are selected to paint a scene on the windows and these are then unveiled each day. Some other towns have a traveling calendar in that windows are used on different buildings, so that you are traveling past 24 buildings looking at the window scenes, much as the wise men or shepherds traveled to see the birth of the baby Jesus.
