Put Your Energy Into Saving Energy This Christmas

I remember last Christmas day as if it was yesterday. Not for the elated pretence when I received a video cassette, for the sixth consecutive year, from my grandparents; nor for the fact my brother stated that it “had been really tough year” and hence why he’d brought me a padded toilet seat. I remember it vividly for the incredible amount of time my parents spent in the kitchen prepping, cooking and then serving an exorbitant festive feast to our family – and how much they complained about it.

So it’s my decision this year that something has to change and one of two things is going to happen: My parents either reluctantly keep out of the kitchen, watch the inevitable down pour of TV mediocrity and my brother and I will cook; or the gifts under the tree comprise of wonderful kitchen gadgets that not only prevent an apocalyptic ending to dinner, but also go towards saving time and energy. I’m more excited than Delia Smith delivering a half-time speech.

And so my search begins. If only I could call upon a battalion of Santa’s little helpers to make this search as efficient and fun as possible. Instead, on this occasion, like more that 20 million Christmas shoppers last year, I will use the internet.

The problem with gas and electricity (similar to the great bearded man himself, of course,) is you never actually see it. There is no visual clue as to how much we’re using, or more importantly wasting, so it only hits home when the bill arrives – particularly those prodigious January statements. Energy prices are on the rise, money is becoming tighter, and although spending money on consumer electronics seems like the last thing any sane person should do, the judicious purchase of cash-friendly gadgets can save us money in the long term.

“Investing in gadgets and appliances that save you money will also help protect the planet,” says Adam Vaughan, editor of the Green Guy. “Unlike most gadgets, modern kitchen appliances offer an easy way to save valuable time in the kitchen and reduce the amount of time we all spend in there. Gadgets that save or generate energy will also have a clear long term financial benefit.”

So, I now know that my parents will be helping the environment as well as themselves this year, which means I can take great pleasure in selecting their new devices.

I first stumble across an electric potato peeler. I know this will be well received as last year a staggering 100 spuds were presented on our table, probably a figure not far off from the Royal Navy’s. The amount of bread consumed (subsequent days ahead of turkey sandwiches) was alarming, so a bread maker will save money and create a wonderful lingering aroma around the house.

“It is a very common habit to preheat the oven before cooking, so just put food in straight away to save energy,” says the Energy Saving Trust. “Also, don’t keep opening the oven door. Every time you do so, your oven loses 20 degrees Celsius of heat.”

This has inspired me to purchase some hot plates and serving magnates, which will reduce cooking time on the big day. I also discovered table top heaters and ovens to alleviate the amount of food cooked at once. Less energy used and more food to be dispatched - surely one of the best things about Christmas!

One item that is a surprise entry on my Christmas gift-list this year is a steam generator iron. Let me explain why: Allegedly, my mother spent two hours from sunrise on Christmas morning ironing and grooming the multitude of table clothes, elaborately-embodied table mats and clothes ready for proceedings. This is certainly not the ideal way to start the day, so if these unnecessary obstacles can be ‘flattened’ out, then we can ‘press on’ with the celebrating and spending time together as a family!

So in order to achieve this harmonious sanctuary, I suggest you take a look at http://www.electricshopping.com - an online electrical haven of products that help you save money and reduce your carbon footprint. Shopping this Christmas doesn’t have to cost you the earth.

Hopefully I’ll be back next year with the news my presents made the desired impact and my parents still intend to cook for the masses for years to come. We’ll see.

A Good Choice of Diaper Bag

Diaper Bag is one of the most important thing the parents must have before their little bundle of joy arrives. It can serve as your extension because your diaper bag will go everywhere you go for the first few years of your little one’s life. Today, there are array of different types of styles, colors, patterns and prices associated with diaper bags. However, you should also consider important factor when choosing the right diaper bag. Choosing a high quality, well-crafted diaper bag is an investment that is well worth the price, as this bag is perhaps your best companion wherever you and your baby will go for the next several years.

Size. Decide on the size of bag you need. You may choose a large bag that enough for all the many items needed to help care for your baby while on the go. Or, a downsize diaper bag that can only hold small essentials. Remember, it will require you to bring numerous baby supplies whenever there is an outing, therefore selecting one with some substantial size will always be a smart idea. If your child is older and no longer need as many items while you are away from your house, you can then think of downsizing to a smaller diaper bag. It will be lighter to lug around and will rid you of items you no longer need while traveling with your toddler in tow.

Personal Taste. A good choice of diaper bag can carry you through the first several years of your child’s life, while making you feel look good. It is important to choose a diaper bag that fits your personal taste of style. Today, there are no room for dreary and boring diaper bags. Instead, available are trendy, chic, and functional with enough room to hold all the essentials for both you and you baby.

Pick the one that has colors and patterns that suit your personal lifestyle, as you will carry this it often. There are many diaper bags that look like purses and handbags carried by women everywhere. There are also colorful bags, as well as intricate patterns that you may find interesting.

Comfortable. Since you will be carrying a diaper bag almost every day, therefore you must consider the fit of the bag and how will carry it. Before buying, think of the bag that can provide you with comfortable feeling carrying it. You should also think about the strap length and width. Ask yourself what kind of bag do you like to carry. This will generate a good idea of what kind of diaper bag you will enjoy the most. Always be mindful that you will most likely be toting your baby, as well as the diaper bag. In many cases, you may have a baby carrier in one hand and the diaper bag in the other hand. Therefore, you should choose a diaper bag that is easy to carry and can make you feel comfortable.

Function And Features. The next important thing you should consider when choosing a right diaper bag is the features and how it can function. Choose one that has several pockets. Also, sometimes separate is better. For instance, you want to keep you diaper or changing pads separate from baby bottles, and your spare outfit from your bottles and sippy cups.

Also, there are available diaper bags that are waterproof, and this is a great feature, as spills are inevitable. Interior dividers and pockets that are waterproof and easy to clean are the best kind. Today, you can have a diaper bag that offers custom-size pockets, each sized appropriately for the necessities where moms on-the-go can keep her cell phone, keys, wallet, baby bottles, lipstick and the like. These little pockets and accessories make it so much easier for moms to find what they are looking for in a quick and efficient way.

Quality And Price. Of course you want your diaper bag to be well-crafted and of high quality so that it can withstand the weight of your baby essentials. These essentials might get heavy, so you want a bag that is durable and can take everyday wear and tear. Choosing a designer diaper bag is always best. Although it may cost more than diaper bags you find at discounts stores, but the quality, features and style make it well worth your money. You can choose a personalized handbag, backpack bag, canvas bag or even a kids bag that you can use as your stylish diaper bag.

Christmas Gifts For Fishing Enthusiasts

With Christmas coming up we all need to start thinking about getting gifts for our loved ones. Well, if you know a fishing enthusiast, then this article should help you choosing a present they will love. Having the right fishing equipment to fall back on brings us anglers a lot of joy.

Many anglers fish from a boat and this might be your main concern at first when you are deciding on a gift. The preferred method is a small row boat with a small outboard motor because a fisherman can actually stand in one of these when he wants to cast. Although it is best to row to the spot where you intend to fish, a small trolling motor is handy for traveling some distances. Big lakes are often best fished with a slightly larger vessel with higher sides as inland waters can also become choppy given half a chance when the weather turns rough. If you have a large budget then these can be great gifts for a fisherman at Christmas.

The right type of footwear is an important part of fishing equipment, especially when you are standing by the side of any lake. What anglers really need is a pair of hip boots because the great thing about these is they can be rolled down when you are not in the water. Many fishermen use hip boots all the time but if you are entering the water a great deal, then hip or chest waders are really better at the job of keeping you dry. These are best purchased so they are a comfortable fit bordering on the loose because tight fitting waders will have more strain placed on the seams and could leak when used for extended periods. Another great gift idea!

Of course you can guarantee if you don’t have a waterproof jacket with you it will rain heavily and these are available in long and short versions generally an an essential piece of fishing equipment. Wading through shallow water or while fishing from a boat would necessarily require a long jacket. Of course the opposite is true if you intend to wade up to your chest level where a shorter jacket is the order of the day. If you wear a jacket with lots of pocket, you find it very useful when you have to put away some lure or other pieces of small fishing equipment. Carry a hat with a visor as staring into the water might hurt your eyes and you need some protection. Jackets can be expensive, but again, any angler would love to receive one as a Christmas gift.

Something, which every angler needs include: the three stashes of lure and tackle box containers and these are for home stockpile, for the boat and the last is for the car. This provides protection against any loss or in the event of any mishap. Getting all your fishing supplies in huge quantities towards the start of the season is a wise idea as this keeps you ready for fishing at night. These types of things are a little lighter on the pocket and may be more suitable if you are buying gifts on a budget.

There is nothing wrong with spending time to obtain the correct fishing equipment if the recipient of your gift takes this pastime or sport seriously. The last thing they want is to be frustrated on a good catch because their equipment lets them down or they just don’t have the right gear to handle the catch with. Just like the boy scouts - they need to be prepared which help you overcome any situation and make the fishing more enjoyable.

Armed with this, try to get good quality fishing gear when you are gift shopping. It will be highly appreciated and there is something to suit every budget!

We’re All Dreaming of a Cheap Christmas

Christmas in my family home has usually started by now and the clues flag up the season like a “SLOW: ICE ON THE ROAD” sign. Christmas paper rolls sneak into drawers, with hideous clashing designs. The card boxes and gold pens are left out and the stereo hums The Pogues in a familiar drunken style. But not this year.

I visited my grandma’s home last weekend, ready to confront a fully decorated lounge and garden with trees literally flashing with premature excitement to find, well, nothing? My grandma snorted: “Don’t you know dear, it is a recession” – and images of her eating a meagre nut roast from a paper bag and giving us oranges as presents suddenly haunt me. “I know” I reply, “but surely you’re going to decorate – it’s not that bad?”

But, perhaps it is that bad? My grandmother reminds me that she is expected to pay £500billion to the government for the banks (I have to explain to her that it is the whole country and not just her handing a big fat cheque to Mr Brown), but maybe there is something in her budget anxiety?

With David Blanchflower of the Bank of England’s monetary policy committee warning us that tens of thousands of people could be laid off every week in the run up to Christmas, perhaps Grandma has a point? I personally think presents wrapped in newspaper actually look pretty chic, but that is just the journalist in me. So how will our houses be decorated this Christmas? Will it just be coal and oranges under the tree, and more importantly, will there even be a tree?

The centre of all Christmas decorations in our house has always been the tree. Every year my mother used to spend hours and hours coordinating it with whatever room it was to feature that year. Christmas without a tree is like Easter without the Bunny, or birthdays without the cake: Christmas trees are Christmas.

One thing my grandma said that they did in the last recession was have fruit and flowers hanging from the trees, but frankly I do not understand. Unless you went outside and picked fresh flowers everyday, you would end up with maggots under the tree and a wriggling infestation under the tree is not something I desire this Christmas.

A report, published last year ‘Banishing Scrooge, the Cost of Christmas’, published by grant-giving charity The Family Welfare Association, explained that a family on an average income spent a staggering £564 on the trimmings - food, drink and decorations - on Christmas Day alone. And that figure doesn’t include presents. We spend a ridiculous 15 hours hunting for the perfect gift and two hours queuing!

Perhaps this year will be a little more modest. Browsing the internet, I come across a few bargains that, after last year’s explosive Christmas, will allow cut backs without losing the important things.

So back to the tree. The internet has become a treasure trove for decorative bargains. Last year the British public spent £7.66billion in the 10 week run up to Christmas, and although purse strings are taught this year, the spend is likely to fall from the streets and straight on to the net.

Wowestores.co.uk offers tons of Christmas bargains. They estimate that more people will be turning to them this year not only as their prices are highly competitive when compared against high street stores with an extremely low delivery price.Alex Wakefield explains that: “Online shopping means you can start browsing and buying for Christmas without bouncing from shop to shop, dealing with the roads, parking, the high streets and carrying bulging shopping bags. A cheap Christmas does not mean a bad Christmas; you just need to know where to shop and where to make your savings. We like to think that online at Wow eStores is one of the better options.”

There is significantly more to choose from than offline too, and with fuel prices high and eco-guilt becoming a defining feature of modern Britain, shopping online seems to tick all the boxes.

So how low can they go? Well, according to Wowestores, you can buy a tree and decorate it for under £50 and that includes 200 multicoloured fairy lights and tree decorations!

In these trying times we should look to what the World Wide Web can bring us and how modern technology can ensure the bells still jingle in your home this Christmas!

Jo-Rosie Haffenden is writing for Wow eStores, a fantastic one stop online store for gifts, presents, inflatables, gardening equipment, gift ideas, camping equipment, DIY products and much more. They also stock a fabulous range of Artificial Christmas trees and Christmas Decorations, there is something to suit all budgets and tastes.

Is Bodrum One of the Best Places in the World to Live?

Bodrum is a Peninsula located near the junction of the Aegean and Mediterranean Sea on the southwest coast of Turkey. It is a town where you can relish bits of both contemporary and ancient life, with its history dating back 2000 years. Besides this, its major attractions are the beaches, nightlife, the Museum and galleries in the Bodrum castle and the Mausoleum of Mausolus, which is one of the wonders of the ancient world.

Although Bodrum is most popular as a summer destination, it is now becoming more and more so for the entire year. In summer, you can enjoy exquisite Turkish baths (known as Hamam), go diving, windsurfing and enjoy boat and yacht tours. Spring is the perfect time for hiking, sightseeing and yachting. Autumn is also a very good time to sail and the Bodrum Cup Traditional Wooden Yacht Regatta is held annually during this season. During winter, Camel Wrestling and the Tangerine Orchards are call to you. Due to all these activities, this town holds an appeal for tourists as well as the residents throughout the year.

Since the mid- 20th century, Bodrum has been attracting many people, including archeologists, artists, investors and tourists. Most of these people choose this town as their secondary residences and some of them eventually became regular inhabitants. This has brought a lot of investment to the town and the business of real estate has flourished.

There are many people, mostly from European countries, who have been living in Bodrum for decades and are working in the fields of archeology, yachting management, real estate, tourism, and some of them also own cafes and bars. According to them, life in this town is perfect, totally safe and they feel protected there. Initially, they had to face difficulties in applying for residency and also in getting a work permit as both procedures are rather lengthy processes in Turkey. Despite these difficulties, there are many British and other Europeans who have moved to Bodrum and are working in the real estate and tourism industries, which are two of the thriving ones in the town.

With all this growth, there have been many positive changes. Besides the development in the real-estate sector, there are a lot of opportunities available for shopping now for the ease of both the residents and tourists. There are many supermarkets, furniture and home improvement outlets, thus making it more convenient to buy things from the very same town instead of loading and bringing along baggage from some other city. Looking at the business opportunities, the British store Marks and Spencer and the supermarket chain Tesco have also opened their stores in Bodrum. The health care facilities are excellent in the town and are very much up to the European style and standards, with two private hospitals. Other than that, there is secure food hygiene and control over environmental pollution.

Considering all these aspects, one can easily say that Bodrum could be one of the best places to live in, as there are all kinds of facilities available along with the sights and appealing climate. It is the most suitable place for you to live in if you wish to enjoy eastern culture, music and food and still be close to Europe as you can do both while living here.

Dream Homes Worldwide offers the exciting chance for you to invest in Bodrum property and live in the lap of luxury as a permanent residence or vacation home.

Fancy Tales Related to Christmas

A lot of what is widely regarded as true about Christmas or held as a tradition cannot or has not been verified, or, has changed through the years.

Do we even know if December 25th was the exact date that Jesus was born? Sceptics have asked why would shepherds be out in the cold watching their flocks by night during the winter. Those sceptics have put forward the thought that Jesus may really have been born in the spring instead. It is therefore little wonder that there are many fancy stories and tales that are told about Christmas and the Christmas season.

The most common fancy tale that everyone tells, particularly to children, is about Santa Claus, also called St. Nicholas. But even if it were accepted that Santa Claus existed, where does he live and how is he able to get to all the houses of good boys and girls on Christmas Eve?

In the United States, Santa Claus is said to have two homes. There is a home in Torrington, Connecticut, which is used as a distribution point for Santa and his many helpers, who are elves, to hand out gifts. And then, a second home is said to be located in Wilmington, New York, and that is where Santa Claus and his delivery reindeer crew are located. But Santa can be visited in Cyberspace at anytime and what about the widely held belief that Santa Claus really lives in a village at the North Pole?

The people of Finland also claim that their country is the official residence of Santa Claus. That’s because in Finland, you can actually visit a village any time during the year and see Santa’s workshop and observe Santa and his elves hard at work as they prepare for their very important Christmas gift delivery job on Christmas Eve. The only day when Santa’s workshop is closed to visitors is of course, on Christmas Eve.Maybe a very smart visitor could visit Santa’s workshop on the day before Christmas Eve to see if there are any clues to how Santa and his reindeers plan to make their trip the next day. That’s because as the tale goes, in Finland Santa Claus and his reindeers do not reach their destinations around the globe by flying.

Finland welcomes visitors to Santa’s workshop but there is nothing said about whether visitors actually have any chance of having a word with the man himself. While the chances of doing so are believed to be non-existent, among the questions that inquiring minds could ask Santa is whether Rudolph is the son of Donner (and to confirm the spelling - Donner or Donder) or whether Santa spotted him in a different reindeer village one foggy Christmas Eve when he had already started on his Christmas toy-delivery mission.

If mere mortals got a chance to question Santa, then he also would likely have some questions for us humans. He may want to know whose idea was it to have Christmas trees and for the gifts to be placed under them. The tradition of Christmas tree as it exists today comes from Germany by way of immigrants. But it isn’t clear how the tradition really gained a foothold in Germany. One story is that Christians in Germany during the 16th century started to bring trees that were decorated into their homes. Some of those Christians would build pyramids for Christmas. The pyramids were made of wood and would be decorated with evergreens and candles, if wood was in short supply.

It is however Martin Luther, a Protestant reformer, who is said to have been the first to add lighted candles as decoration to a tree based on his inspiration from the brilliant light of twinkling stars that shone through evergreen trees as he walked home one winter evening. As the legend goes, Martin Luther placed a tree in a primary room of his house and placed wires with small, lighted candles around the branches of the tree. And that is how, as the tale goes, the Christmas tree as known today, was started.

Christmas Music

Christmas music in the form of carols, songs stringed or instrumental renditions, is constantly heard during the Christmas season. Music forms the background against which everything else takes place to make the Christmas season different from all others. Christmas music plays such a significant role that during the entire season, other popular music temporarily disappears from radio. That may be the reason for all the different types of Christmas music - sacred, secular, popular and traditional - that have emerged throughout the years.

Popular and secular renditions of Christmas music have been developed by musical artists and performers who ‘make over’ classic styles of Christmas music with their own personal touch. One reason for popular make over of Christmas music may be because regular popular music is not heard during the holiday season so pop musicians and artists do Christmas music to keep their voices always in earshot of their fans and the general audience. It could also be that they want to capitalize on the popularity of Christmas music. Whatever the reason, it has become a trend for popular musical artists to release new Christmas or holiday music albums during the season. Since variety is the spice of life, it means there are more variations of secular, sacred, classical or traditional and popular renditions of Christmas music that can be heard.

Music at Christmas time is important to create the right mood. The prevalence of Christmas music is what helps to create the special holiday type of feeling or spirit that is present everywhere and among everyone. Everyone has particular Christmas songs and carols that are favourites, maybe for the melody, the lyrics or because they are reminders of special memories.

The most popular Christmas song is said to be ‘White Christmas,’ which is popular even in warm and tropical climates where people sing of ‘dreaming of a White Christmas,’ which in reality they would not want. Other popular Christmas songs and carols are: Away in a Manger, which tells the Nativity story in song; O Holy Night, Silent Night, Joy to the World, Hark the Herald Angels and Angels we have Heard on High.

All of those songs are sacred and are all about the story of Jesus’ birth. Of note also is Handel’s majestic ‘Hallelujah Chorus,’ which is a favourite that choirs like to sing because of the splendour embodied in the music. Nat King Cole’s ‘Chestnut Roasting on an Open Fire’ is a classical favourite. It defies categorization as it isn’t sacred but is also not considered secular like a song such as ‘Sleigh Ride.’

Among secular Christmas songs, there are also funny ones such as ‘I Saw Mummy Kissing Santa Claus Underneath the Mistletoe Last Night’ and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. The availability of a wide Christmas music selection makes it possible to choose ones for different occasions, such as for general use at home, for a fun or informal party or for a formal dinner. As an example, selections can be made to create the right mood at the start of a party, followed by more lively music when the party is in full swing, and then selections to slow down the pace when the party is nearing its end.

It’s also important to note that professional groups such as choirs, symphonies and orchestras will also record performances of Christmas music on albums. For the very serious and critical music aficionados, these albums will provide wonderful listening pleasure and also make good Christmas presents. Listening to music from those groups is also a way of enjoying their performances if doesn’t get the opportunity to attend a live concert by the professional group.

Whatever selections of Christmas music are made however, it’s likely that it will create a festive mood and spirit among all who hear or are listening to the

music.
